Merlot the misunderstood?

Merlot doesn’t always get good press. As Miles Raymond famously says in the film Sideways: “If anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any f****g Merlot.”

You could say, though, that Merlot is the misunderstood grape. Because really, as wine expert Mark Oldman says, “ it is such a likeable wine – soft, rich, without the gum-numbing bitterness that wines like Cabernet Sauvignon can have.” And Merlot, in case you were wondering, is the main ingredient in Château Pétrus, one of the world’s top wines.

For our next tasting, on Wednesday April 13, we’re going to feature Merlot in all its smooth roundness. We will be featuring eight wines, all from California, including: Arrowood 2001, Red Horse Avila Ranch 2001, Sterling Vineyards 2005, White Oak Vineyards 2001, Bliss Family 2005, Francis Ford Coppola 2003, Murphy Good 2004 and Columbia Crest Grand Reserve 2006.

The tasting will be held as usual at the RCAF Officers’ Mess, 158 Gloucester St., at 7 p.m. sharp. The cost is $45 for members and a first guest ($55 for non members) and includes cheeses and pâtés.

Oregon wines please

It’s a sure bet that few of us had heard of Sokol Blosser wines of Dundee Hills, Oregon, before this month’s dinner and tasting at Tosca restaurant in downtown Ottawa.

It’s also a pretty sure bet that many among us made a beeline for the nearest LCBO after the tasting to pick up some Sokol Blosser wines.

The winery (www.sokolblosser.com/) is in the Willamette Valley just south of Portland. We tasted five wines, including two whites (Evolution and Willamette Valley Pinot Gris 2009) and three reds (Meditrina, Delineau 300 Pinot Noir 2008 and Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2008).

Evolution and Meditrina (both $19.95 in the LCBO’s general selection) are blends. Evolution, which contains nine different grapes beautifully balanced, was a real hit.

The Meditrina had a bit of caramel on the nose and good body. The Willamette Valley Pinot Gris was light, while the two Pinot Noirs, which will be available at the LCBO later this year, were very nice. The Dundee Hills in particular was rich and complex and had a lot of people nodding.

SAW Zinfest

In California, they have a Zinfest every January. We decided to follow suit and hold our own Zinfest at the Mess on January 12.

Our cellarmaster brought in 10 Zinfandels – including two ‘mystery’ Zins that were not identified to participants – and we set about evaluating the wines in our first tasting of 2011.

We worked in two batches of five wines.

The first batch included a Clos du Val 2008; a mystery wine that turned out to be an L.A. Cieto, a Mexican Zin from Baja California; a Paul Dolan 2007; another mystery wine (A-Mano from Italy, made with the Primitivo grape, a cousin of the Zinfandel); and a Rosenblum Cellar Paso Robles Appellation Series 2007.

The Clos du Val was a medium wine with a raspberry and blackberry nose and a somewhat sharp taste. The Baja Zin didn’t find too many fans; it was described as having a slightly ammonia nose and a tangy strawberry Jell-o taste. The Paul Dolan as described as tasting of tart cherries and plums; the sharpness of the wine was remarked on. The Primitivo was thin, a bit acidic, with hints of jam and – for some – peat moss and grassy notes. The Rosenblum was by far the favourite in the first batch, with a jammy, black cherry, fruity nose and a fuller, rounder taste that pushed back a bit.

The second batch included a Cardinal Zin Cellars 2007; a Ravenswood Big River 2004; a Watts Winery Lodi Pescador Vineyard 2003; a Rosenblum Eagle Point 2001; and a Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley from 2004. Opinion on these wines was much more divided.

The Cardinal Zin, with a spicy nose and blackberry and plum on the tongue, was described as a wine that would hold its own with dinner, though perhaps a bit thin.

The Ravenswood had a weaker nose of cranberries and chocolate, with a bit of tartness on the tongue and a rounder feel. The Watts showed its age in its orangey colour and its dusty (cocoa?) taste. The Rosenblum, though two years older, was in much better shape – a full-bodied wine that held its own and generated a lot of approving nods.

The Lytton was not as forceful a wine, with a floral nose and a less assertive presence.

Our first event is a Zinfandel tasting; it will be held on Wednesday January 12 at the Mess and will cost $45. We will be asking you to register for the event after the Christmas party.

For our February event, we are planning an Iberian meal – probably at Café Spiga in the ByWard market. The tentative date is Tuesday February 22. Details to follow.

This is to let you know that the SAW Christmas cocktail party will be held on Monday December 6. We need to know as soon as possible whether you are coming so we can order the food.

The party is not an official tasting, but a social get-together with sipping wines and a tasty array of nibbles from Les Saisons, the caterer we have been using for our events.

The party this year is being held in the same location as last year – in the party room of a condo building at 3590 Rivergate Way in the Hunt Club area.

The building is just off Riverside Drive, where the Italian restaurant Vittoria Trattoria is, at the corner of Riverside Drive and Rivergate Way with the traffic lights. If you are coming south on Riverside, turn right onto Rivergate Way and stop at the security gatehouse, give your name and say that you are attending the function in the party room as a guest of Mrs. Dorothy Pratt. You will be directed to park your car and then come in to the building and the concierge will direct you to the party room.

WHEN: Monday, December 6, 2010

WHERE: 3590 Rivergate Way, Party Room

TIME: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

COST: $40 per person

To register: Please email us at saw.ottawa@gmail.com or call Suzanne Allain at 819-663-4563.
